THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

So I was recently contacted by someone who’s about to launch a clothing brand who wanted some advice. One of the questions I asked him was; What happens if you launch and sell out of your initial stock? What happens if you launch and don’t sell out of your initial stock? To the first question (i.e. selling out), he responded that once he fulfilled the orders, he’d then put the brand on pause because he’d also be in university and would need to focus completely on school. To the second question, he said he’d also pause because it was clear that it didn’t work. So he’d pause and maybe try again in another 2 years…maybe!I pulled 2 lessons out of the remainder of our conversation, which inspired today’s Thought of the week.1.) FINISH WELL

His response illustrated to me that he was going to take a break regardless of what happened. In the face of success at what he wanted, conceived of, built and cultivated, he would pause to focus on something else.In the face of his first business failure (which is rarely permanent), he would also stop.I hope you’re seeing a problem here.Success in any arena of life, doesn't happen accidentally.Specifically in business, sometimes some products don't sell either because the product is not viable or the product is viable, but just not marketed, positioned and presented well.In the latter scenario, assuming the product is good and viable, it then becomes a matter of tinkering and pulling on different levers to try to make it go.And that can involve multiple things. It could be any number of things from, pricing to advertising (or lack thereof), to presentation, to wording, etc.But there is no magic bullet.I mentioned to this young man that at my email marketing agency, working both with our house brands and client brands, we have systems that’s helped generate up to $800K revenue or taken a brand from $0 to $20,000/month, and one as much as $100,000 in a month. And I’d be willing to show him those systems for FREE.BUT the one common factor between all of those we’ve worked with is…They were in it!They were committed! They were ready to keep doing the work whether it initially worked or not.If it worked, they celebrated and were ready to repeat and double down on the winning strategy. And if it didn’t work, they were of course disappointed, but were ready to troubleshoot, figure it out, then try again with a different approach right away. One thing connects all success stories, a willingness to keep going, to keep learning and to keep figuring it out.As a Christian of course I believe God is ultimately the one who brings success, but His word also speaks of sowing and reaping. It speaks of being diligent regardless of the outcome. It also speaks of being faithful with little, as a precursor requirement to being blessed with more.Nobody likes failure, but that’s part of life. And cliché as it sounds, there are no real losses if lessons are extracted from them. So in failure, we learn, adjust and keep going. In success, we learn and keep going. This is true not only for entrepreneurs but for all of us and I spoke to this in a previous newsletter where I summed up the Success formula as: Preparation + Positioning + Providence. Two of those we handle, and the final we don’t.With all this in mind, starting something with the intention to not see it through is likely the worst foundation upon which to build or start something.

2. BE LIKE NIKE

Now I am mindful of the fact that he’s in Uni, and will have school work. But here’s the harsh reality; life doesn’t get less busy. After Uni, he’ll then have to figure out paying his bills and sustaining himself. Which probably means he’ll need a job. Once he starts that job, he’ll now have 8hr+ of his day dedicated to his job, and only a few hours left to try again. Not to mention the comfort that comes with a steady paycheck will increase the risk of him launching this brand. And I haven’t even talked about girlfriend/wife, kids, etc.My point is; starting his brand will NEVER BE EASIER THAN IT IS TODAY!I would argue that while he’s in school, is the BEST time to try, then try again, then try some more. Before the reality of bills and life crash in with their full weight of responsibility. What’s your takeaway? Now is your best time to try that thing you want to try. It may not be starting a business. It may be taking a trip, reaching out to that person, applying for that promotion, etc. (FILL IN YOUR THING HERE)Life moves on with or without you. And with each passing day, the inertia of your indecision grows. IT WILL NEVER BE EASIER THAN IT IS NOW TO DO THAT THING.So unless your external circumstances have so conspired as to make it physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually impossible for you (which is rarely the case), in the words of that perennial brand….JUST DO IT!
